The route leaves the built-up area of Agerola and heads immediately towards the upper slopes of the Lattari Mountains, following a steady but even climb along old mule tracks and well-defined sections of path. Having passed the initial belt of cultivated land and scattered houses, the trail enters a more mountainous environment, characterised by woods, clearings and open slopes that offer expansive views of the ridge. The progression reaches a series of passes and ridges — including the areas of Monte Sant'Angelo and Monte Rotondo, and brushing past Colle Sproviero and Monte Candelitto — with continuous changes of perspective over the Amalfi side and the interior of the Lattari. The final, gentler stretch crosses pastures and high-altitude scrubland until it reaches the Santa Maria dei Monti Refuge, situated in a panoramic and isolated hollow, typical of the high-altitude environment of the area.
It is a hiking itinerary of medium length and difficulty, with a good elevation gain and a gradual transition from the rural landscape of Agerola to the more austere and open terrain of the higher altitudes. It is recommended to undertake it with some experience in a mountain environment. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers, and bring a hat and a few spare items of clothing (socks, t-shirt). There are no water sources along the route except at the start and finish. Seasonally, one can resupply – by making a detour – at the San Giuliano spring, by turning left at kilometre 3.2. It is still useful to bring a water bottle of at least 2L. If you intend to walk several consecutive stages of the trail, check the availability of accommodation along the route. It is recommended to download the route tracks onto your phone and install one of the main hiking apps (OSMand, Locus Map, Komoot, Strava) to follow the correct path.
