Church of the Cross

Along the ancient Via Maggiore, the road that connected Nuceria with Salernum through the mountains, lies the Croce pass.

Here is situated the church dedicated to Saint Helen. On the high altar, a canvas depicts the Saint with Saint Gregory, Bishop of Armenia.

The church of Sant'Elena was part of the parish of San Pietro, as attested by the ceramic tile on the entrance portal. It only became a parish in 1920. A sepulchral plaque inside, dating from 1699, testifies to a settlement of Armenian monks: even though it was not a large community, given its location on the Via Maggiore, it hosted passing travellers and Armenian merchants travelling from Naples to Salerno.

Following the suppression of the religious orders, the old rooms annexed to the church were used for a time as rural schools.
